Return to Rainy Mountain is a 30-minute documentary film that tells the story of poet and author N. Scott Momaday. It is a personal account of his life and legacy told in his own voice, and in the voice of his daughter Jill, who directed and produced. Momaday speaks of his Kiowa roots, family, literature, oral tradition, nature, identity, and the sacred and important things that have shaped his life. Raised by his Kiowa father and Cherokee mixed-blood mother on Indian reservations in New Mexico and Arizona, Momaday was honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship, Academy of American Poets Prize, Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, National Medal of Arts and election into the Kiowa Gourd Dance Clan.

Thanks Sheila —-here’s hoping that it will be shown again and more widely. Jill’s presence on NAC show with Tara Gatewood about the film and honoring her father and her ancestors was very moving…and universal…beautiful! Looking forward to seeing it one of these days! (will Youtube ever be considered?…such a wide audience there…)/msa

Hi ! @SHEILA SECLEARR;…thank you for your response….I’m in Albuquerque NM & watch KNME affiliate. Will there be any attempt to show it at local cinemas? (GUILD in ABQ, for instance). If NOVEMBER is “American Indian Heritage Month” then I truly hope local affiliate will show it in NM…please do post any other play dates…film festivals, etc so I can share that on Facebook as well. Thank you

Hi Miriam. Thanks for writing. Where are you located? The PBS affiliates nationwide will all have independent showings, if they choose to run the film. It helps if you call or write your local stations. November is the PBS “American Indian Heritage Month” so we hope they run it in Nov.

We may post dates of the New Mexico PBS showings if we get some lead time. We also plan to take the film to festivals this year and we’ll post about that. Let us know if you have good ideas.
